other films by Kaneto Shindo

None of Shindo's other movies are available on DVD in the United States, although both Children of the Atom Bomb and The Island are available on videotape through Facets. If you have a multi-region DVD player, on the other hand, there is a massive four box, 21 disc retrospective of Shindo's work available in Japan (The Kaneto Shindo Anthology). Many of the better known films in the set (Onibaba and Children of the Atom Bomb) are subtitled, but the majority of films are not (The Island is not, but it doesn't have any dialogue in the first place). Kuroneko is available from the UK on tape, though if you are in North America, you'll have to have it converted to NTSC.

Shindo also wrote many films for other directors. Seijun Suzuki's Fighting Elegy is one of these films and has been available on video tape from Home Vision Entertainment, though I believe it is currently out of print.

I hope this has been helpful.

Thanks, I was wondering about that. Guess I'll have to get the box and then learn Japanese or watch it with Japanese friends. Are the other films in the box also good? It will be hard to surpass Onibaba ;-)

Naked Island and Kuroneko both were released in the uk in the last few weeks and are also in the Eureka Masters Of Cinema series just like Onibaba

The Naked Island is very different from Onibaba and Kuroneko, but it's excellent. It has nothing to do with horror. It's a drama about a poor rural family living on an island; kind of slow and minimalistic, but spectacular in its own way.
