shareA great film by a great actor/director!!!!!!...BTW:this film is available on NEW VIDEO NYC in a 40th anniverary special edition....the wealth of information in the insert booklet is insane!!!!!!!!!..PLEASE,PLEASE pass the word on this film it needs to be seen by not just african-americans , but by anyone who feels as if they've been put down and abused for no other reason then who and what they are.It works on all levels...class,money and race, its a primer on what it takes to be a man.Oh , let us not forget the soundtrack-a who's who of great MOTOWN singers and the cherry on the cake Ms.Abbey Lincoln who is awesome as Josie! I found this film late in life and it is now in my top 10 favorite films of my life!!......its avaible at Virginmega stores, Amazon.com and Deepdishdvd.com.
shareThis is a beautiful film - it captures an epoch in such a rich and real way - the actors were great (Ivan Dixon definitely had the talent! He definitely brought great presence to the main role, but even the smaller parts such as his father-in-law were well played). This is better viewing than some of the more recent films that are set in this time period because this was of the era- it captures on film the degradation and frustration and also the human emotion of that time and space.
The DVD has good extras in the interviews. Abbey Lincoln seems a bit eccentric, but on the plus side she was (and i guess still is) a very Afro-centric woman. While watching the movie with a female friend she commented on Abbie wearing a wig throughtout the movie (quite noticeable esp in the scene when Ivan goes to see her at the beauty show to borrow $$$). In real life Abbey has been wearing unprocessed hair since the 50s, but for roles like this in which she played less politicized characters she had no trouble wearing a wig.
