Love this film but...

As much as I appreciate and respect Duff's struggle, the part where he shoves his wife, tells "her love don't matter," doesn't apologize immediately, and basically just randomly abandons her is hard to compensate… He does go back to her in the end, but it just feels like she was reduced to just a "I will lovingly wait for my man to come back while he goes on and acts like a jerk" type character.

Yes, I'm inclined to agree with this. Duff is clearly troubled and frustrated but shouldn't have been forgiven so easily - it doesn't give a great message. I would have liked Abbey Lincoln's character to be developed a bit more.

Very good, interesting film overall though.

I’ll be waiting, with a gun and a pack of sandwiches.

It was a different time. Women were more forgiving of abuse. It doesn't make it right, but it was believeable for 1964.

Correct.
