guys with maracas

They were hilarious. Just walking around shaking their "maracas".

reply

I think that was part of what Maxin paid them to do.

Yes, they WERE hilarious! Their names were as stereotyped (the young, "hot" Latin lovers) as their characters: "Pepe and Pedro". Maybe "Maxine wanted them doing that", but at one point, she snaps at them and tells them to knock it off! I think it was Huston's idea of the "typical" Mexican. He wasn't known for his cultural awareness! I loved the scene in which they knock out Skip's lights in the boxing match!

reply

thank god Huston didnt have "Cultural Awareness", which really means "Political Correctness", which is the worst sin to art, ever. Huston did love Mexico though, even more than America (even though he got rich in America and wouldnt have gotten a dime in Mexico).

Political Correctness, the Clinton-era religion, should just go away. But it won't. Sad but true.

This film is great, for it was made before everyone got so AWARE of everything.

reply

Ugh! I hate it when people think Political Correctness is automatically wrong or somehow "quaint"! Anyway, I wasn't chastising Huston for not knowing about Mexican culture (you don't think he really DID, I hope!), but rather, excusing him for the beach boys' stereotypical behavior. No doubt, the maracas and dancing were his poor substitute (times being what they were) for actually showing Maxine having sex with the boys. The closest they get is a voluptuous night swim.

Huston also could not show the true pain that Ms. Fellowes must have felt; a Lesbian in love with a young girl, forced to stand back as she seduces one man after another!

Ms. Fellowes "maracas" (i.e., sex substitute) are her power trip and her insane hatred of Shannon and Maxine. In this film, everyone seems to have a "cover story", or defense mechanism...or both.

BTW, Can people PLEASE stop picking on Clinton, already? It's gotten really, really OLD!

I agree with you 100% Dissing the Clintons and political correctness are all te sad legacy of conservatism in this country. People of this mindset probably don't see anything wrong with how Buckwheat was portrayed in The Little Rascals!

reply

Thanks for the support! It seems that the Clintons are filtering into EVERY Topic these days! I was just on a site this evening, to find out times for the lunar eclipse and of course SOME bozo had to trash Hillary! Cripes.

As for Buckwheat...how did Eddie Murphy get away with that skit on SNL? Or was it an ironic commentary on racism. It gets so confusing...

As for commentary on Mexicans (and everyone else), I prefer Carlos Mencia! Like the South Park boys, he spares no one.

Blacks can make fun of themselves (AND whites). Don't you know the rules?

reply

My husband loves this movie. He said that was always his 'dream job' - shaking his maracas for a hot older woman instead of working a real job! ;-)

reply

If I had nice maracas I'd be shaking them

reply

"People of this mindset probably don't see anything wrong with how Buckwheat was portrayed in The Little Rascals!"

Well he always "seemed" a happy lil guy on the show, with his big and brightest smile that helped to light up the days. Besides, he and Porky were so cool together. And I always thought they were all just cute as can be.

reply

Political correctness is always complained about by people who have probably never had to suffer the slings and arrows of bigotry and ignorance.

reply

Or by those of us who are tired of those like us always 'throwing a card' when they don't get their way.

reply

What do you mean cultural awareness? Every time I see a *beep* on the street, they're shaking maracas.

" Cristal, Beluga, Wolfgang Puck... It's a f#@k house."

reply

You're blaming the Clinton era? What about the real culprit of a religion-era? And that's GW, one of the worst presidents since Hoover! Loved the film though:)

reply

The absolutely WORSE is Jimmy Carter, followed closely by the Clintons, followed by Obama(who hasn't even taken office yet but has telegraphed his intentions very clearly which = disaster)followed by GW.
BTW. DOWN WITH POLITICAL CORRECTNESS. It is rapidly destroying a once great country.

reply

ashes to ashes, funk to funky, we know major toms a junkie

reply

So, you are listing President Obama as a worse president than dubbya????? I'm not going to get into the pluses or minuses of every president since Carter, but to include a president who hasn't taken office yet shows me where you're at. Really, George W. Bush rates higher on your list than Clinton and Obama?
I at least give you credit for INCLUDING Bush on your list of the worst, that shows that your not in complete denial.

I also HATE "POLITICAL CORRECTNESS" but I don't see how any president can be responsible for a change in what is deemed acceptable behavior and speech, it also takes a large amount of people to accept it as correct to make it happen don't you think? Really "P.C." is just the terrible extreme of what began as positive changes brought about by the various human rights movements of the 60's. So, if your going to blame someone blame those hippies!!!!!!!

...just kidding....or am I?

Really though people, I am writing this in 2010 (from the FUTURE!) and I truly see "political correctness" on it's way out. Most people are sick and tired of the results of P.C. bull---t. What started with good intentions, I believe, has become the opposite. A step away from the freedom's and equal right's that had been fought so hard to gain! I really think that MOST people now see that there is such a thing as being too "correct". Just look at the things that you hear and see on television and movies that would have been totally unacceptable in the 80's & 90's. I didn't say that it's all positive, but at least more people are saying what they want, instead of what they are told is correct!

Really though "emailtom", it's POLITICAL CORRECTNESS that is destroying our once great country? I thought it was GREED!

Please don't take me too seriously! Believe me I rarely mean what I'm saying.

Oh, I almost forgot, I loved those guys with maracas too!
Great movie can't wait to see it again on TCM this SAT! (Feb 20th 2010) Followed by "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" which I have never seen but have heard it's incredible!

You are a person of rare and subtle political and human insight; you chose the right moment to speak

reply

I don't think you need to worry about political correctness any more. Most Americans don't have awareness, period, let alone enough knowledge to be "politically" correct! This country has already been destroyed, by Dubya, Cheney & Co., and they're still at it behind the scenes. PC-ness is the least of our worries!

She deserves her revenge, and we deserve to die.

reply

"THIS COUNTRY HAS BEEN DESTROYED BY DUBYA CHENEY & CO." ??????? Wow. That is absolutely amazing. That administration prevented any more attacks here, did a pretty good job with economy until the left got control of congress in o6 and started our downward spiral. Then Obama and his company of misfits and incompetents says we haven't hit bottom yet and proceeds to guide us into the nosedive we are now experiencing. Spending endlessly with absolutely nothing to show for it. Now THAT'S destroying a country.

reply

Actually, political correctness -- even the term -- started in the early-'80s on Reagan's watch.

The guys in maracas was copied from a scene in Dino Delaurentis famous 1951 film Ana. The scene was the Negro Zumbon song and dance scene played by Sylvia Mangano (wife of De Laurentis). This movie and scene made her famous. (Re: youtube Negro Zumbon, Sylvia Mangano)

They were "toys" for Maxine. Wasn't that obvious?

reply

Perfect.

Actually, it wasn't obvious to me until 'Maxine' explicitly said she had her 'biological needs' but knew the difference between sleeping with someone and love. Then, it DID seem obvious! Like the guys smiling at each other, and trying to follow her into a back room, etc.

Some of the articles of the time intimate that Ava Gardner enjoyed the beach boys' company and charms offscreen, as well.

reply

I thought the guys with the maracas were hilarious. My favorite moment with them is the nighttime scene where Maxine, frustrated and upset with Shannon, calls for them. Nearly instantly, we hear the "ch,ch,ch" start of the maracas and then they emerge from the darkness of the background. The time lapse between her call and their response is virtually nil, so that it seems they just wait in the wings, as it were, to be summoned by her at anytime. It's priceless. The maracas boys' beating up the bus driver was pretty priceless, too. And deserved, too, since all they were doing was dancing, at the little lolita's request to boot.

reply

They were unrealistic... They had the chance to double team Eva Gardner, and basically just decided to shake there maracas instead. Total Bulls**t.

reply

I agree--they WERE a scream! Did they ever put those things DOWN? Was your reference to Sue Lyon as "the little Lolita" from her role as "Lolita" in the film of that name? I just wrote (in my copy of the book) how Nabokov was totally wrong in saying Lyon was "great" as Lo, but I did add that she was perfect as the very NON-nymphet seductress in this film--poor Shannon!

Mmmmm, they're sure were funny in the beginning, though became kind of creepy after a few scenes doing that all the time.

Actually, they were! lol You'd think they could have thought of another activity beside that to keep busy in-between "Night-swimmin'" with Maxine.

Christopher Jones (who?) got his start in L.A. theater in the early sexties playing a beach boy in this play.

reply

They were so silly, lame. Part of what ruined the film for me.

reply

I loved the film but those idiots were the worst part of it. Likely a gay fantasy of ol' Tennessee. I did still enjoy the comic punchout at the bar on the beach and felt that Ava's embracing and then spurning of them in the waves was useful in underlining her unreturned love of Burton's character. Still, them standing around shaking the maracas was way too gay.
