for the ones with nostalgia

It's interesting the Irish actor who played the old wise philosopher emperor Marcus Aurelius (Richard Harris) in Gladiator, WAS ORIGINALLY CAST -when he was young- to be COMMODUS prince in The Fall of Roman Empire!!!! Charlton Heston who was El Cid and Ben Hur was supposed to act in TFORE but he was interested now in 55 Days in Pekin epic, hence his "enemy" in Ben Hur (the Irish actor Stephen Boyd who played Mesala) was cast in his role (Livius character) but having his hair dyed blonde. In Ben Hur he was wearing brown eye contact lens to have a meanest look but you don't see him wearing those lens in the famous charriot scene (sometimes) because the sand was entering and damaging his eyes. The same Yakima Canutt who orchestred the horse race in Ben Hur was hired in TFORE, and we see the spectacular race chase mimic.
Riddley Scott used a charriot scene as well in the circus but more like in the film Barrabas than Ben Hur or TFORE.

Stephen Boyd rehearsing with a horse-chariot (check the horses are pale and not the black ones he worked with in Ben Hur):

Nazi regime was inspired in Roman empire (including the double-headed eagle), hence Riddley Scott borrowed from German Nazi system:

In The Fall of Roman Empire from which Gladiator borrows a lot from, the Roman Forum set was gigantic, that’s the way films in the 60’s were made instead of using computer virtual reality. Riddley Scott knowing art was inspired by paintings, of course:

…. I have to say, I like better the lions devouring Christians in Quo Vadis or the fight between Victor Mature stunt in Samson & Dalila. See a photo from Quo Vadis Roman Circus and other sets:
