I had a privilige to see Mr. Anthony Quinn perform on Broadway and I loved his acting in this film. There are two actors who shone, both on Broadway and the silver screen:
The late Mr. Quinn is one and the other favorite guy I saw on Broadway was Yul Brynner in The King and I;

Great film indeed, but the direction didn't always convey the time difference between scenes. For example, a couple of minutes after the widow is killed, Basil is seen smiling in the "mountain event" (for lack of a better description). One would expect this scene to have happened at least a few days (if not weeks) later, after a minimal period of mourning, but it felt like both scenes happend in the same day.

the film is okay. i just think its overrated. quinns great as zorba, and the madame also gave a good performance. but alan bates was very dry and uninteresting. the movie had its moments, but overall it boring at times and i think it ran too long. however, the last half of the movie was really shocking, and like i said it had some great moments. but its not THAT great though... I agree. Especially during the first half I really got bored. Althony Quinn's acting saves the movie. I give 6 out of 10.

I find it hard to believe that anyone would think this film is boring, but I do remember seeing it when I was younger &, though I enjoyed it & certainly wasn't bored, I didn't appreciate the film as much as I do now that I'm in my 50s.

Age gave me a much different perspective on "right & wrong" & human frailty. I hate all the political correctness that's being imposed on us at the moment. Life is not just "black & white" like people would have us believe.

I do think that many of you missed the philosophical aspects of the book/movie.

reply

I totally agree with you. Mikis Theodorakis is one of the greatest composers of all times, Anthony Quinn gives one of the best performances.
