Just saw the movie. What was stunning was how they all wanted to stone the widow, but no one even raised an eyebrow at Basil...surely he played some part in their affair! No one so much as glared at him!

Noone raised an eyebrow at Basil because as a man, he got the prize, slept with the the gorgeous widow that all the other men in town wanted to have. Their rage was only intensified by the fact that she turned her nose up at the locals and screwed a foreigner. In their eyes, she lost the moral high ground by giving up her goodies and they used the son's suicide as justification for exacting revenge.
