Why is the movie not called Zorba the Cretan. Picking a nit, it seems to me that Alexis Zorba is a native of Crete; and thus, he does not hail from another Grecian islet. Of course, one might then mistake Zorba as an examplar of the Cretin paradox--"all Cretins are liars...." since both words sound the same--i.e., Cretan = Cretin?

shareThere was no indication – either in the book or in the film – that Zorba was from Crete. (In any case, Crete is part of Greece). "Basil" was half-English in the film but in the book, the narrator (whose name we are never told) was totally Greek. In both the book and the film, it is possible that his father (and possibly also his mother in the book) could have come from Crete since the family owned the lignite mine.

PS: Zorba is not Cretan. Zorba is actually born in the Greek part of Macedonia.
