Wasn't what I thought it would be.....
The movie was depressing as hell---really made me disgusted with Greek peasants, both men and women (wow, where those some ugly old ladies!). The men lolled around, looking at everyone who wasn't them with deep distrust and dislike, teased that poor widow, and then, b/c they didn't know who to blame, they kill her in a terrible manner! The old women were a bunch of moldy vultures, the French lady was so tragic and just plain sad, Basil went around with an eternally confused look on his face and even Zorba was a bum and not to be trusted, as was obvious from his little trip for Basil. What the heck was wrong with the Greek Orthodox priests, who were saying Mass just inside the church? A woman was being brutalized and then murdered almost in their faces! What about the words of Christ, didn't the men and woman think they applied to them? "He who is without sin shall cast the first stone." No one hesitated in casting the first stone and many to follow! The cinematography was very convincing, for sure; I felt hot, sweaty and in great need of a tall glass of ice water by the end. Well, there are my opinions, such as they are. I'm sorry I watched this movie.
