So ... I was reading an article by a Dr. James Gilligan ...

And I was wondering if Gilligan, was Gilligan's last name, or first.
I am used to thinking of it as his first name, but where has anyone
ever heard of someone named Gilligan? I don't know ... have you,
or is Gilligan a last name?

OK, I did some searching, and though it was never established
or shown in the series, in the pilot Gilligan's name was Willy
Gilligan, or at least that is what they decided they would call
Gilligan if or when it was decided he needed a full name.

This is discussed on Snopes.Com here:

So, Gilligan was Gilligan's surname, i.e. last name.

reply

Yes that is correct.

reply

Gilligan was his last name. Sherwood Schwartz literally picked it randomly from the phone book.
