I've been giving some thought to an important premise of the plot: the aliens caused brain explosions followed by death only to the scientists who were interfering with their object to prevent earthlings to "encroach on" their territory.

How, then, did they kill Major Clarke in this way when he was a security officer and not a scientist?

Because he was on to them? He was also in possession of the formula, on his way to lock it in the safe.
