Allure of the red car

It seems to me that Bardot's "contempt" for Piccoli was actually self inflicted. She seems to be enticed into the commercial fast lane by the allure of Jack Palance's red car well before Piccoli makes any suggestion for her to travel off alone with Palance on the ill fated journey to the country house.

Do you mean because she walks over it before he asks her to go with him? I thought she did that on purpose to entice him into asking her, as a way to test her husband.

She wanted her husband to protest, to oppose, and to display jealousy towards Prokosch's attentions. That didn't happen. And so she was pissed. Mightily.
