..watch his stylized over the top mannerisms and clipped staccato delivery in this sequence (which by the way, doesnt fit with the actor's performance in the rest of the movie)....think William Shatner was taking notes???
No, I thought Poitier was fine here. You have to remember that up until that point he'd been eating minimal, starvation-type breakfasts with the nuns, and this was his chance to splurge on a huge, mouth-watering, "salute to cholesterol" breakfast. His exuberance as he places his order was both logical and understandable.
I agree with murph24 on this one. He had eaten so many one-bite breakfasts with the nuns, his reaction to being able to order a much more substantial meal was very understandable and believable. The "Trekky" analogy just doesn't apply in this case.
"At a time when cynicism masquerades as sophistication, [AWTR's] theme is worth touching upon."
I agree w/the other poster. Sidney should have been "over the top" in this scene. As the other poster said, he hadn't had a substantial meal since he'd been working for the nuns, so he was more than eager to have a large breakfast. What you call 'over the top" was just him being earnest over finally receiving a awaited substantial meal.
