WHAT did I do?

I was just going to say, the end of this movie that I saw showed a child digging and then looking up and yelling at some airplane. Then the typical nuclear detonation. So they really did drop the big one in this movie?

reply

In the version I saw there was no detonation. He was yelling "Stop stop' then it faded to the MGM LION.

It is ironic that you asked this question. My husband and I just saw this movie Friday night, 2015. We saw the exact same thing but interpreted it differently.

The plane was flying over and the child was digging his hole, yelling "Stop Stop" and then as leader-7 said, the picture faded as the plane's engine noise kept getting louder. My husband was sure that it meant that the bomb detonated. My take, however, was that it was the child's "paranoia" to a normal plane flying over.

The ending was definitely left open to personal interpretation.

YES YES! Nannyjo -- that was what I was thinking as well. (I think nothing happened, because as the little girl's mother <who was ironing> said, "if it were really going to happen the radio program wouldn't have had music on, but an alert. I grew up during those times and was accustomed to air raid drills in elementary school. Not for one second did any of us think this stuff was actually going to happen (despite what some posters have said about the goverment). I grew up in NYC and truly, it was more for 'theater' than for real.

Anyway -- it was an interesting movie.

This ending fits the saying, "Just because you're paranoid, doesn't mean they're not out to get you," in that it could have been a bomb or not.
How long would it take before the girl suffocated in the refrigerator?

The writers were both women, and it has a uniquely pre- or early-feminist viewpoint.

reply

I don't know -- but there seems to be an inordinate amount of discussion about that. We are merely observers and the boy may have found her minutes later after the plane flew over. Does it really matter?

The teachers were told it was a false alarm earlier in the movie if you remember.

Hopefully, there was a bomb so that the girl in the fridge didn't die needlessly.

Also, are we so sure that was a plane up there with a smoke trail? I first thought it could be an intercontinental ballistic missile, ICBM, and was so high I knew it was going to land hundreds of miles away.

reply

Everything points to it being a false alarm. Late in the movie the teachers at the school said it was a false alarm.

The lady teacher riding with the truck driver asked him to turn the radio on and there was only music.

There was a jet flying overhead at the end, but that was probably just coincidental. They were in a very rural area. In a real attack, major metropolitan areas would be the targets. Plus by 1963 they had ICBM's, so jets probably wouldn't have been used to deliver the bombs.
