Altered dialogue

Just finished watching the last half hour on HBO Comedy channel and noticed a curious thing. During Peter Falk's rant to his cabbie dispatcher, the word "retarded" (which he meant for "the cops in this town") which was used twice was altered so that he only says it once. The second time it is substituted with the word "morons" (which is now used twice). My question is: does this now exist on the dvd or is this a special version that HBO now shows.

reply

I don't think there were any changes made. I believe the dialogue has always been:

"The cops in this town are morons. Retarted. I'm dealing with moronic people. 'Cause he's in a bad humor, that fat Nazi. What? I gotta suffer because of him?"

reply

Your quote is correct, that's the way I remember the line. However this time I was watching Falk's lips, and the line is looped (!!!), expertly done. Sound magicians!.

reply

Another line that has not been changed/edited YET. Falk talking to Rochester about Buddy Hacketts character, "I overheard them talking, the nut, the stutterer". Really not PC nowadays, but the irreverance of this movie is part of why it is soooo great.

"Irwin, we're gonna' have to kill him"!

reply

I predict that in the near future films that we now know and love will be altered and edited because they're too harsh for the pc crowd.

reply

Some have actually suggested doing just that. Their argument is if you can cut things like sex and violence because they're objectionable and offensive you can also do it for things like portraying a racial stereotype.

reply

So eventually, we're gonna get a cut of IAMMMMW with Eddie "Rochester" Anderson's scenes and Nick Stewart's sequence completely omitted. Or digitally altered so their skin color looks white. Or dubbed over with Shakespearean voices. "As I put it to you so bluntly when the idea was first broached, I was deeply opposed to migrating to this wretched state!"

reply

It wouldn't shock me if at least part of what you described comes to pass. I doubt that anyone would modify skin color, but it's conceivable that a broadcast network or cable channel might show IMMMMW editing our the entire Nick Stewart sequence and at least part of Eddie "Rochester" Anderson's part. It might have already happened!

reply

I thought Falk was referring to Melville Crump being the stutterer! He stutters in at least one scene.

reply

Yes, he was referring to Crump (Sid Caesar) not the Buddy Hackett character.
