i was about to sit down to watch this movie tonight, love paul newmans character in this, then i bloody remembered.these movies always have to have the "token' love interest female",woman ruin these movies, why do movies always have to have a female love interest, patricia neal is old ,boring and her voice is hideous, wont be watching it now.

I wouldn't necessarily call Neal's character Alma Brown just a love interest. She was older than Hud, and had seen a lot of hard ranch life. Relaxing on the porch with Hud after cooking and cleaning was a great scene. Beer in one hand, cigarette in the other, she lets Hud know the dark truth about himself. Others may be fooled, but she knows just how rotten he is and how much he is really self loathing. I think Hud is attracted to her because he really deep down needs to hear this about himself.

Her voice is perfect for this particular character: a husky, Southern drawl.
You should try to watch this movie again and look a little deeper into her character. There is a lot more going on than just a "token' love interest female".

Good explanation, ill watch it again to see what you mean, thanks

just as well, because this fine film doesn't want you to watch it.

I agree with kbarada. Across the board, this film is brilliant. And Patricia Neal's performance is spot-on. Tough yet open; worldly wise yet caring. The rest of the cast is on par...just wonderful. It just doesn't get much better than this. Sad, poignant, heart-felt, real. A classic of American cinema. 50 years on this film still resonates...great story, acting, directing, etc. So memorable. Enough said.

Sorry, I thought she was a 'smoken' hot MILF.

She was great actress. I loved her voice.

I think that husky Southern drawl was/is perfect.
Patricia Neal's characterization was wry, a little sad, wise, sexy- everything that the role called for and her voice was the icing on the cake.
Mind you, she's one of my favorite actresses anyway, so I feel that
she can do no wrong.

She was great in this and in 'A Face in the Crowd' as well.

reply

the voice happened way before she was ever a smoker from being nearly oked todeath by a neighborhood bully she was perfect for the part

"why are you married to him then if you can't work with him how do you live with him?"

reply

Another post by a college student who thinks the world began in the nineties. Of course how unusual people smoked!

reply

I think she is hot.. And does a great job in this flick.

reply

Patricia Neal was not 'old' when she made "Hud", she was only thirty-six, actually a bit younger than Paul Newman. As for her voice, she sounded the same in movies of the late 1940s and early 1950s, when she was only in her early to mid twenties. At that point in her life, she hadn't been smoking long enough for it to have had a noticeable effect on her voice.

reply

True, she had the same voice in all her movies. It didn't change with age.
