One of the best movies ever made!!

To anyone with good taste this movie is fantastic. Just watched it on Channel 4 in the UK even though its very early in the morning! Could not take my eyes of the screen everything & I mean everything was perfect. Story, acting, cinematography, editing, pacing etc etc. Without a doubt one the best movies every made & well in the top 10 its quite literally a masterclass in everything you could ever love about watching a movie.

Paul Newman was so good in this & one of the top 5 actors who ever lived or will do as his breed of actor is sadly long gone & will probably never return......

Patricia Neal was also superb in a minor but very important role she was so convincing & gave such an understated but powerful performance.

Melvyn Douglas was amazing as the wise but bitter old man (even though he was only in his early 50s he played it much older) who knew he was fading but fierce pride refused to let him accept nature was catching up with him.

Brandon de Wilde also gave a very strong but quietly effective performance as the teenager who wanted to be Hud but was torn between hud & his fathers bitter relationship.

Top notch acting all round all 4 deserved the oscar really & direction by Martin Ritt was also superb & should have won but he was sadly overlooked. The fantastic stark cinematography by James Wong Howe did happily win a well deserved oscar as its probably the best B+W shot movie ever made.

Hud works on so many levels & is so well made it should stand the test of time & in 100's of years if movies are still made/watched this will be rediscovered by anyone who values the skill of the actor & a very well crafted film which is pretty much perfect!

My #8 film (all-time). Newman's best film AND performance. Should have won Best Picture of 1963 (not nominated).
