Lancaster was actually speaking in Italian most of the time (though he knew he was going to be dubbed), while Delon I think was speaking in French. Leslie French was speaking in English, Serge Reggiani in Italian... and all the Italian cast of course in Italian.

But it was from the beginning intended to be entirely dubbed--as was the custom of Italian cinema back then. And Luchino was known to be extremely elaborate and obsessively detailed in his dubbing/mixing sessions. The sound design of this is quite amazing.

Yeah. The soundtrack is probably the most careful I have heard in Italian films. You can feel the distance of the sound placement especially in the ball scene where you have all this chatter on the soundtrack carefully calibrated alongside the dialogues and the music.

Sicilian is quite different from the Tuscan dialect which makes up the basis for the official Italian language. When I watched The Godfather for the first time I was astonished at how much like Spanish it sounded. Not surprising, when you consider Sicily was under Spanish occupation for a couple hundred years.

Yes, but the novel was written in Italian, there are almost no Sicilian words in it. And this is realistic, the upper class characters at least would have been speaking regular Italian, not Sicilian dialect.
