halfway through it.
Caesar has just been killed.
shareSo hownos,
What did you think of the final cut? And did you like the film overall?
I just saw it for the first time and I thought it was quite good, I really liked it. The sets and costumes are quite remarkable, as they should be for a film that was the most expensive in history to make at the time. According to inflation adjusted dollars, Cleopatra, was a 400 million dollar film.
The version I just saw was about 4 hours long. I'm not sure what they showed in the theaters but I did think the first hour was the best, 2nd hour was solid but not as good as the rest of the movie, last hour or two was really good. Although, I do think the Battle of Actium could have been better, it was pretty good but it just seemed so disjointed for some reason. In fact, several parts of the film seemed a little disjointed overall.
Still, one of the great epics in film history in my view, I gotta give it an 8 out of 10. And not sure why some are complaining about Liz Taylor, I thought she was very good in this. Everyone did a good job though. It's a fun movie to watch for sure.
I read one article about this movie and how it almost bankrupt 20th Century Fox. Apparently Burton had an affair with Liz while filming this movie and it caused some controversy because he was married at the time. The studio thought it would hurt the movie. Plus, Liz got sick and this slowed down production as well.
