There is absolutely NO WAY

...that Cathy would (still) want birds as pets after her experiences! I just do not find that believable---or that Mitch would agree to bring them along in the car, especially with Melanie there, and so traumatized. I don't think any of them would even want to *look* at birds again for years after that. I think they would have developed an aversion to avians, to some degree.

It was their pets. As far as the survivors were concerned they were part of the family.

It was also meant to symbolize hope for the future...bird disarmament. In real life one of those lovebirds killed the other one on the set! Word.

Hahaha. If that's true, I love it. Filthy animals.

I read that one killed the other, but I cant be sure. Lets call it an alleged murder...

reply

I did some googling and lovebirds do fight and even kill each other!

They had the birds for one day, when the children were attacked at the party. These are hardly beloved pets. I absolutely agree with the OP that Cathy would never ask and Mitch would never agree.

A dog owner can be afraid of pit bulls and be traumatized when they're attacked by one, but still love their own dog.

So yes, it makes sense that the kid would want to keep her pet bird. What doesn't make sense is the adults agreeing to take the birds along without a quibble, a kid may believe that their darling would never turn on them but the adults ought to know that under those circumstances no bird could be trusted!

reply

Exactly. Never trust a bird!

Imagine a final twist...young Kathy opens the lovebird cage and the two of them fly out and peck out her eyes!

That's the thing, though. These lovebirds were not her darlings. One day elapsed between her receipt of them and the bird attack at her party and in her home. Cathy also witnessed her beloved teacher being killed by birds. Finally, she sees Melanie in a traumatic trance, still seeing birds attacking her, and turns away in horror and sadness.
