I used to think the Birds just wanted Melanie!

Many here on this topic have discussed the unusual ending where the birds just suddenly cease their actions and let the family escape.
Because I watched this movie as a kid I had my own interpretation as to why this happened.

First off when we are introduced to Melanie its revealed bit-by-bit through the movie that she was a serious trouble-maker causing no end of mischief.

Then throughout the movie most of the time the birds committed no acts of violence except when she was around.
Other people getting killed just seemed like collateral damage.

Even the hysterical mother in the diner says none of the trouble started until she showed up.
This all caused me to theorise that she might have caused an act of mischief that may have grievously harmed the bird population and they were specifically out to get her.

So when the birds finally got their beaks and claws into her they all suddenly, collectively calmed down.

They let the family go as if they were saying; "We got what we wanted so we're letting you go!"

At least that's what my 10 year old mind interpreted.

I was thinking the birds were mad at Melanie for having the caged Love Birds.
