Is this a comedy?

I think the movie is great, but I never understood why people found it funny. I've seen it 4 times, and it never made me laugh out loud constantly. There are some funny moments, but not enough to classify it as a great comedy (to me, at least).

Please don't think I'm a troll for saying this. I do sincerely like this movie.
If you think it's funny, why?

Same here. I'm watching it now, for the first time, and while I am definitely enjoying it, I guess I'm missing the humor of it. It definitely strikes a cord with me, but it just isn't a funny one. Maybe it has something to do with the version we've seen? I am currently watching it on VHS from my local library, and the subtitles are all in white, and are sometimes bleached out from the white background, so I can't read them. Sometimes, there are lines which aren't even subtitled at all, and I don't understand Italian, so maybe the humor is in some of the bits I'm just missing altogether. Are there versions of the film (maybe on DVD?) which DO NOT have this problem?

I just watched it for the first time, too, and have to say that I was surprised to find myself laughing out loud numerous times. I didn't expect to. The scene where all the women suddenly turned on Guido because he wanted to send an old one "upstairs" was hilarious, I thought. Actually, that whole sequence was pretty funny (his infantilization, the overtly archetypal behavior of the women), but it could easily have been very silly in the hands of a lesser director.

Yes. Not silly.

should depend on your mood but on the whole seems to me more of an elegiac piece than strait comedy

its subject is the whole of life and as such it just cannot be simply funny

but there is indeed a focus in it of amusing yourself simply about yourself that is

dont you think?

Plus comedic tastes change over time. I can appreciate a Chaplin film for instance but it would rarely make me laugh
