what are your top ten favourite films?

just interested, what would you say are your top ten favourite films of all time?

reply

Finally you get one answer.
My favorites of all time are:

2001: A Space Odyssey
L´Avventura
The Battleship Potemkin
Casablanca
Citizen Kane
Fanny & Alexander
La Grande Illusion
Ladri di Biciclette
The Seven Samurai
Wild Strawberries

I think this kind of list changes all the time and there´s also so many movies I haven´t yet seen which could be that great, like 8 1/2. So this is only my opinion of today. I think all of listed films are among the very greatest treasures of cinema, so remarkable in many ways.

reply

Excellent list. My favorites are on there - Kubrick, Bergman and Antonioni.

reply

1. The Godfather (Coppola)
2. Citizen Kane (Welles)
3. Casablanca (Curtiz)
4. Chinatown (Polanski)
5. The Godfather Part II (Coppola)
6. Vertigo (Hitchcock)
7. La Regle du Jeu (Renoir)
8. La Dolce Vita (Fellini)
9. Singin' in the Rain (Kelly/Donan)
10. Some Like It Hot (Wilder)

My top 10 constantly changes, so here are some films that could be on it tomorrow:

8 1/2 (Fellini)
Psycho (Hitchcock)
A Bout de Souffle (Godard)
Sunset Boulevard (Wilder)
All About Eve (Mankewicz)

2. 20,000 leagues under the sea

Seven Samurai (K. Akira)
Pulp Fiction (Q. Tarantino)
12 Angry Men (S. Lumet)
Life Is Beautiful (R. Bengini)
The Dark Knight (C. Nolan)
Gran Torino (C. Eastwood)
Mulholland Drive (D. Lynch)

American Beauty (S. Mendes)
Donnie Darko (R. Kelly)
The Departed (M. Scorsese)
In Bruges (M. McDonagh)
The Lives Of Others (F.H. Von Donnersmarck)

This is an organic list that was whittled down from 50 films. I Know that there are 13 films and you asked for ten but I really cannot take any more off. As a consequence of this board, I have had to totally rethink my top 50 films and spend upwards of £200 (roughly $400) in new films that could possibly go on my list. Thanks to the OP for this. I really wanted that new barbecue.

I didn't know r. kelly directed donnie darko before trapped in the closet

reply

i love every single one of those films except the battle shop potemkin. i can appreciate what eisenstein did with that film and some of its featured sequences are incredible, but i just can't really take it in as a complete film, especially compared to the greatness of so many other films, specifically from the 40s, 60s and 70s

Listing your top ten of all time is kinda silly. It always changes and you end up putting stuff on there just to sound like a pretentious movie snob. I like these flicks, so don't get me wrong on this, and I'm not trying to diss on anybodies lists here. However, I think that listing the top ten films that REALLY affected you the first time you watched them would be a bit more interesting. What do you say?

reply

This is more than three times more than 10 but here are some movies that affected me for many different reasons. I know I'm forgetting some but these are just some of my favorites. Also I cannot ever rank a top ten list, it is just too hard.

Annie Hall
A Clockwork Orange
Ace in the Hole
Apocalypse Now
Barry Lyndon
Citizen Kane
City Lights
Double Indemnity
Dr. Strangelove
East of Eden
Edward Scissorhands
Eyes Wide Shut
Fargo
Full Metal Jacket
Gangs of New York
GoodFellas
Kundun
Mean Streets
Midnight Cowboy
On the Waterfront
Once Upon a Time in America
Paths of Glory
Psycho
Raging Bull
Rashomon
Rear Window
Sunset Blvd.
Taxi Driver
The Apartment
The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
The Searchers
Vertigo
12 Angry Men
2001: A Space Odyssey
8 ½

reply

Seriously... you put it in alphabetical order?

... wow.

reply

Hahaha is that a problem? Its hard to rank. By the way that list is so dated. I ton of my favorites aren't on there and a ton of those are off. Here is the updated.....RANKED!

1. Vertigo
2. Taxi Driver
3. 2001: A Space Odyssey
4. Rashomon
5. The Godfather I and II
6. Citizen Kane
7. Persona
8. The Searchers
9. A Clockwork Orange
10. 8 ½
11. Apocalypse Now
12. Annie Hall
13. On the Waterfront
14. Psycho
15. Touch of Evil
16. Raging Bull
17. Barry Lyndon
18. GoodFellas
19. Dr. Strangelove
20. Midnight Cowboy

20 not 10. Got a problem with that?

My three favorite films (order changes): Vertigo, Taxi Driver, and 2001: A Space Odyssey

reply

Why are you at this board? All you films are english.

reply

I couldn't agree more. I always find it ironic that people who make these lists, always choose the same films. Whatever happened to individuality?

reply

Agree with you here, and here goes my list of movies which affected me on the first viewing,

1) The Usual Suspects.
2) Fight Club
3) Saving Private Ryan
4) La Vita e Bella
5) Lilja 4 Ever
6) Requiem For a Dream
7) Pulp Fiction
8) The Prestige.
8) A Clockwork Orange.

hmm, big fish.. really on top ten of all time? weird.

anyway. my favorite movie is A Clockwork Orange. that almost never changes. before that my favorite was Pulp Fiction because it was the movie that got my into movies [made me actually understand there something other than plot and such], then i saw Kubrick's masterpiece. anyhoo, every movie that people have posted thus far is incredible, except big fish which was mildly entertaining but lacked a heart. if you really wanna talk about top ten, actually talk to me. i love movie conversations. [email protected] :)

reply

i dont know how you can say big fish ahs no heart. but then i read your cliche answer of loving a clockwork orange and no longer took your opinion seriously

Old Boy is definetly in my top 5 movies, have introduced so many people to it. It's an amazing movie.

My favourite Films:

1. 8½ (I have this on when I'm bored, which is often. )
2. Hamlet (BBC, with Derek Jacobi in title role--another film I watch incessantly. )
3. A Street Car Named Desire (Brando--too bad he died, ; Elia Kazan--good riddance Benedict Arnold, brilliant tho' he was.)
4. MacBeth (Orson Wells, Contraversial use of Scottish accent. Niche.)
5. The Endless Summer II (Pat & Wingnut's excellent adventure. A guilty pleasure. )
6. Blue Crush (I luds Hawaii, I gots to go to Hawaii. And the only thing hotter than Hawaii is Kate Bosworth. Hubba, hubba. )
7. Elizabeth I (Cate Blanchett--best actress EVER!!! , Shekar Kapur)
8. Panther Panchali (part I of Apu Trilogy; The Little Rascals meets Karl Marx meets Ghandi. Apu's children now are taking jobs away from American IT workers. )
9. Alexander (Oliver Stone, a bit too much man-love goin' on but an amazing, albeit fictional, attempt at explaining the superhuman drive of history's Alexander The Great. But it didn't show enough of Alexander's intellectual curiousity, which would have portrayed him as as being even more amazing than was shown in the film, which is exactly as he was in real life.)
10. Manon Of The Spring (A greek tragedy set in France.)
11. Malena (Hot babe alert! ) --a tie with "Manon..."

Ogres are like onions.
