How did they make the antenna go up and down?

shareI don't know the answer, but would guess the two plastic (possibly metal wire) antenna were pushed up through a solid tube or tubes. Some kind of appliance was adhered to the back of his head and his hair combed over for scenes where Martin walked around.
I remember seeing the antenna looking different in some stills. Perhaps the design was modified along the way.
