What I Don't Remember about Gerard and Kimble

Was Gerard 'on the case' before the ride to the death house or was he simply 'escorting Kimble there?

I've been watching the show since the 1960s and I can't recall this point.

Gerard made mention of the fact he had checked out Kimble's story of a one armed man during the criminal investigation and found no evidence to support it. So clearly he was involved before the train ride to the death house.
