Was the One-Armed Man's motive ever established?

For murdering Helen Kimble, I mean.

No motive, just a botched breakin and he panicked.

I wondered if the OAM, if caught, could have received a lesser "involuntary manslaughter" charge. He didn't plan to kill her, but did when she attacked him. He could have pulled the self-defense plea, having 'accidentally' killed her. Then panicked and split.

However, in Kimble's case, it was Murder. Can't recall; was it 1st or 2nd degree? Probably 1st, carrying the Death Penalty. Horribly ironic.

I'm no legal expert, but it's occurred to me.

Any thoughts on this?

Yeah, a big argument heard by neighbors, then he storms out and apparently returns and kills her. That's premeditated. See similar discussion on 12 Angry Men board.
