I have two (revealing) questions

1) Why don't they ever use the Tardis to solve the episode's problem by going back in time and eliminating whatever causes the problem? I don't mean 'kill', but for example, taking away someone's REASON for creating a problem.

2) Why don't they ever cross-timetravel? I mean, time traveling inbetween episodes - think how cool THAT would be. The Tardis arrives from a future episode or a past episode, and then returns, answering questions you might have about a mysterious previous episode, where Tardis disappears for awhile and comes back with some solution. Or something.

The possibilities these two things would open up are staggeringly vastly numerous, aren't they? I mean, it would definitely require intelligent writing, but it would also reward the thinking viewer deeply and in a satisfying way.

Instead, just like in every sci-fi story with some kind of 'miracle power', they SEVERELY underuse the Tardis and time traveling.

Instead of these two ideas, they resort to the money-friendly FORMULA of 'let's just please the lowest common denominator so they don't ever have to feel stupid', and use Tardis ONLY to whisk them from 'episode to episode', or 'adventure to adventure'.

Obviously these prolonged, tedious stories are stretched to multiple episodes, but I will just call one story an 'episode', regardless of how many actual episodes it takes, for simplicity's sake.

I mean, the only function of Tardis is to just transport our heroes from one adventure to another, and not much more, when it COULD DO SO MUCH MORE.

Oh, well.. maybe I can next time incarnate to a planet with actually intelligent writers for its entertainment, and masses are not idiots.

This show doesn't try very hard, to be honest. It utilizes the usual tropes and formulae to please the TV audience in the most pandering of ways, and people lapped it up for some reason. Tom Baker's quirky charisma is the only thing that could make me watch this stuff. I am sure most imaginative writers could write better and less cliché-filled stories than what we're shown here.

I don't get the attraction.. it's just so predictable, so clumsily and boringly done 'non-interesting' 'supposed-adventure' where things don't really even make much sense. It uses every single cliché in the book, it's kinda hard to not groan while watching this.

How many times do we have to see the 'dobbelganger prince' story? Paul Murry did it, Get Smart did it, The Simpsons probably did it, and this show certainly didn't see anything wrong with doing it AGAIN. What the F.. why this crap, when there must be a million more imaginateve and interesting stories out there?! WHY?

I can certainly answer the first question.

The web of time is mentioned a lot, maybe more in audios. Basically the doctor can't cross their own timeline and they aren't really supposed to change the past as it could cause too many issues.

If the doctor was to go back and stop the events of the episode before they happened then it would probably cause a paradox. By stopping the events in the past it means the doctor can't have stopped them in the future but he's only there because he did.

Hope that makes sense
