Missing episodes?

I have never watched this series, but I've read in the past that some episodes were broadcast and were 'lost', never seen again and that some were able to be at least rescued in low quality by recordings done by audiences and other international tv stations that had bought the rights to the series in their region?? This sounds very interesting, any fan that reads this can share if this is true and more details?

Oh it’s definitely a thing, you can read all about it here:

Don’t mention it 👍

I myself have a DVD of an old story from the Patrick Troughton era that was lost but the audio track was recovered and they animated it to complete it. Haven’t watched it yet though, to be honest I bought it as a collectors item but I will get around to it one day.

Yeah the BBC apparently threw many of the recordings out for space, regretting it later. This was before people could easily watch media at homes e.g. VHS, DVD etc.

Over the years some have been found and some are believed to still be out there. A few years ago 1 full story was discovered and another with all but one episode. Interestingly the one with the missing episode apparently was discovered with all episodes but during transportation it apparently went "missing."

What has surprised me is I read some articles a few weeks back that said some people actually know where they are. Apparently there are a few private collectors who have some episodes but won't return them as they fear they would be personally attacked and probably would want some financial reward/compensation. If they are true fans I'd hope they'd share them with everyone but it doesn't seem likely.

For now many of the serials are being animated as pictures and the audio have survived. Sometimes there can be a bit of a disconnect with them but it's better than nothing
