Why is Planet Of The Spiders R1 so hard to find on DVD?

shareIt's one of the many Region 1 DVD's that have gone out of stock in recent years. Fortunately I managed to pick it up before the price went from $25 to $75+ on Amazon.
Other's that have gone out of stock include The War Games, Genesis of the Daleks, Revenge of the Cybermen, The Face of Evil, City of Death, Earthshock, Time-Flight, Mark of the Rani, The Two Doctors, Battlefield, Ghost Light, Curse of Fenric and more. Fortunately I also managed to grab Genesis before it went out of stock, but it's going to be difficult to get the rest.

I'm surprised that so many stories, including some well loved ones, are out of stock. Thankfully, I bought "Genesis" three years ago during my 50th anniversary Who buying binge.
Looking at the other stories listed, I had given some consideration to buying "The Face of Evil". But not anymore - I'm not going to pay $65 for it.

Yeah, it sucks, and I believe there are others as well. I believe Ghost Light's been $150 for a while and I remember seeing The Two Doctors at $700, but now it's completely unavailable on Amazon (the only Doctor Who story marked as unavailable right now).

Wow. I asked for "Terror of the Zygons" for Xmas 2015. I didn't get it, but immediately bought it for myself afterwards. Lucky I did.

I just checked and Horror of Fang Rock literally just went out within the past two weeks. Jumped from $8 to $80. I'm VERY lucky because I just bought it last month and wasn't even planning on it, but saw it was very cheap and knew it was a good story. Guess I got one of the last copies.

I just happened to check the price for "The Face of Evil" on Amazon again today. As noted above, it had been a ridiculous $65. It then went up to a preposterous $70. But today they had one "used, like new" copy for sale at the eminently reasonable price of $14. I snapped that up in a hurry.
So OP I recommend you check Amazon or eBay periodically. You might find a reasonably priced used R1 copy of "Planet Of The Spiders". share
