Five rounds, rapid

Retro finished off The Daemons tonight with Episode Five. In it, the Brig used his famous phrase, "Five rounds, rapid."

Was The Daemons the first time that catchphrase was used? Retro skipped Spearhead From Space, so if it turned up there, I didn't hear it. And I don't recall hearing it in any other Brig stories leading up to The Daemons.

reply

It was the only time it was ever used.

I haven't read it, but in Paul Cornell's No Future, the Brig has Paul McCartney executed. This is apparently a contrived reason for the Brig to utter the (admittedly quite funny) line, "Chap with Wings, five rounds rapid."

But it was never meant as a catchphrase.

Oh dear, that's awful - but yes, quite funny!

His other great quip was "Just for once I'd like to meet an alien menace that wasn't immune to bullets!"

He also says "Five rounds rapid" in Battlefield, if memory serves. Kate Stewart also says it once in New Who, just can't remember which episode.

Ah, I thought it was a sort of catch phrase for the Brig that was used many times. Sort of his version of reversing the polarity of the neutron flow.

I've only seen a handful of Brig stories before Retro TV started airing in my market. I'd only seen The Invasion, Day Of The Daleks, the Fourth Doctor one(s), and Mawdryn Undead.

reply

I think this was the only time in the TV series it was uttered, but somehow it stuck with him or fans because it was what Nick Courtney decided to use as the title of his autobiography.

This was only said once during Pertwee's reign, although there were several variations, and IIRC he said it in The Five Doctors because it was expected of him.

I'm reversing the polarity and you're reversing it back... we're confusing the polarity"

On the DVD commentary, Terrance Dicks said he put it in there as a reference.

I had always thought from somewhere I had read that whenever Pertwee couldn't get the technobabble down in an episode, he'd just replace it with reversing the polarity of the neutron flow because he could pronounce that.

Five rounds rapid turned up in The Trial Of A Time Lord Part Four. Said by someone other than the Brig, obviously.

reply

The Green Death uses a variation on it: "Ten rounds, rapid."

they needed to knock it up a notch
