Frontios

Into the future, on a planet called Frontios, we see meteorite showers that cover the planet by some unknown enemy, naturally 3 strangers show up, and who wouldn't add 1 and 1 and get 3
Of course when the earth sinks in, taking bodies with them, like quicksand, going undergrond is the only way to get answers, we learn that Tractators and something called the Gravis are responsible, The Doctor manages to send them off to a world of their own, and are off to another adventure

One of the Fifth Doctor's best stories, I remember watching it when it was first shown and being terrified of the way people were pulled through the ground.

reply

Its funny. I place it as one of the worst stories ever. The Doctor's reaction to the TARDIS' destruction was horrible.

In the kingdom of the blind, you're the village idiot.

It does seem oddly divisive

A hilariously inept serial. The Frontians are so thick that it has been suggested that they are the mid-management people who the Galifrenchans sent off on a space ark to get rid of in "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy."

EDIT: Well, here are two totally opposed views of this story. They were even posted within seconds of one another. Oh, well. That's what Doctor Who fandom is all about.

Trust me. I’m The Doctor.

The end of episode 1 came as quite a shock as there had been rumours about getting rid of the TARDIS at the time. It certainly made a pleasant change from all those "die, Doctor!" cliffhangers.

So this is permanence, love's shattered pride.
What once was innocence, turned on its side.

This one holds up really well, Chris Bidmead really knew how to write good stuff for Davison's Doctor, he gets to take charge... as usual CHB's a little focused on the TARDIS, but at least this time he made it interesting by destroying it and scattering it around the place

Lesley Dunlop is great

<scratches head> is this the one where Turlough threatens an entire planet with a coat stand, Captain Onedin is the baddie, and the aliens are woodlice ?

Balotelli...Aguerooooo! I swear you will never see anything like this ever again!

yes

I have to say the Tractators while being limited in how they look might be one of the most original creatures I've ever seen in Doctor Who. I love the idea of a creature that captures you using traction. Wonderful stuff.

reply

Yeah, the gravis looked relatively effective
