Update: http://tvshowsondvd.com/news/Doctor-The-Power-Of-The-Daleks/22863
I don't like the fact that they're indicating the R1 release will be omnibus format, to match the theatrical presentation. I do like that they're apparently including the color version that is coming to Blu-Ray in the UK. And just good news for an R1 fan like myself that it's coming out. I'll probably still get the R2 DVD, though. Or I may take a chance on the R1 DVD being like the R2 DVD.
Of course, that is IF this story does actually get released in R1 on January 31st. Remember what happened to the last R1 Doctor Who DVD release.
Where did they get The Power Of The Daleks is the 7th Dalek story? If we count Mission To The Unknown as a standalone Dalek story, that still only makes 5 Dalek stories before The Power Of The Daleks.
Thanks for passing this info along. As an American fan, an R1 DVD release and any information for one was of particular importance to me.
Technically, the Daleks did appear at the end of THE SPACE MUSEUM - not to mention the Dalek casing that appears during that story - so perhaps they were counting the number of serials in which the Daleks simply made an appearance.
Just a thought.

Or maybe they're referring to the Peter Cushing films.
So this is permanence, love's shattered pride.
What once was innocence, turned on its side.
That makes the most logical sense. It depends on your definition of "Dalek story." I tend to think of it as a story starring the Daleks as the monsters. But, "Dalek story" could be taken to mean any story that features a Dalek in it. Like The Five Doctors could be a "Dalek story" because it features one for like 5 minutes.

Nice extras, but don't like the redesigned cover that is no longer in line with all previous DVD releases! Oh well...
Now, here's the big question.
The R1 DVD cover art says it's in black and white and color. Yet, it's only a 2 disc release as the cover art says. As a 6 episode story, 6 episode stories fit on 1 disc. And since a telesnaps reconstruction is also included, that would take up a disc, too, since it runs the same length of time as the animated reconstruction. (Well, barring any extra animator credits.) If a color version was included, it should be a 3 disc set.
So, what is it? Does that cover art actually reflect the contents?
Now, given the telesnaps version would use still images, though it's the same running time, it's MPEG-2 file size should be significantly smaller than the animated version. So, it's possible, then, that the extras are split across the 2 discs. 1 disc contains the animated version and some extras and the other disc contains the telesnaps version and some other extras. It's possible that the telesnaps version could be small enough that the color animated version could be on the 2nd disc, along with the telesnaps version as an extra.
Or, the cover art could simply be wrong. There is no color version included or it's a 3 disc set instead of 2.
Got my R2 import DVD today. It seems the telesnaps reconstruction is a DVD-ROM feature. How that exactly plays out I haven't checked out yet, but from the back of the box text, it says it's a "ROM feature." This implies it only plays on a PC. So, it must be content contained in the root directory of the DVD or within a folder in the root directory. Could be an AVI or some other container. Haven't checked it out yet.
The upshot of this is the R1 DVD should be the same DVD as the R2 disc except for the region coding and the NTSC video standard replacing the PAL. So, on the R1 DVD, the telesnaps reconstruction should also be a DVD-ROM extra. This means that there could conceivably be a black and white animation on one disc and a color animation on another. However, this would also mean the R1 DVD was especially prepared different from the R2 DVD, as the R2 release does not have the colorized version on it. There is precedent for this, though. The R1 DVD of The Five Doctors: Special Edition had the commentary track R2 didn't get until the 25th Anniversary Edition. And the R1 DVD of Remembrance Of The Daleks standard edition had its video effects corrected from the erroneous release of the R2 DVD, which R2 didn't get until the Special Edition release.
Hm, I don't know what the BBC was smoking when they made the back of the Power R2 DVD, but the telesnaps reconstruction is NOT a ROM feature. It's part of the DVD video itself. Generally, a "ROM feature" would imply a DVD-ROM feature, meaning you can't access it on your DVD player. Unless that player is a PC DVD drive. Of course, one can argue ANY feature on a DVD is a ROM feature because unless it's a recordable DVD, a DVD is a DVD-ROM. Thus, "ROM feature."
So, the telesnaps reconstruction is a 2 hour plus standard MPEG-2 video stream on the DVD that can play on a standalone DVD player.
I still don't know how the R1 release can contain both a black and white and colorized version of Power. Unless as I speculated before, the telesnaps reconstruction MPEG-2 stream would be smaller because it uses video with still images and not moving frames.
