Mark Of The Rani

Mostly all thumbs up!
Kate O'Meara is very good as the Rani, another Time Lady, this time working with/against the Master. 3 Time Lords/Lady in 1 serial, almost too much.
Poor Peri, left to chase after, or be chased by and never quite figuring out the story.
When first seen, back with the 5th Doctor, she had Spunk!, she gave the Master back as good as she got, and although she tries this w/ the Doctor he isn't the personality 5 was.
So, seeing the Master, he has no trouble with her now.
It's interesting learning what tricks the Rani has, but the master doesn't seem to have much of a problem. I quite liked the mine traps, turning a local boy into a tree.
I know we get to see the Rani again so I look forward, Kate is well worth watching, not only is she an accomplished actress, but quite attractive also

If you like experimental 1980s plastic surgery maybe.

I'm rewatching this one at the moment and it kind of seems like Peri is still pretty gutsy, she just ends up getting overridden and quite literally 'shouted down' by the doctor.

The Rani is a brilliant creation, not ostensibly evil... just callous and single-minded... actually there seemed to be a bit of that about during Colin's era, Sil and the mentors were pretty much just bureaucrats, money-men.. or money-slugs. I mean Sil was probably the nastiest of that species, but he was more greedy and self-serving rather than openly despotic.

For all the jip Pip and Jane (actually 'Jip' would have been a pretty good couple name for them) get about their occasionally ostentatious dialogue, I think it's quite nice (a) you should give kids something to work towards, not dumb things down and (b) the scene where Peri is in the bathhouse with the Doctor, Master, and Rani, you do almost get the vibe of her being a mere mortal in the presence of callous deities to a certain extent

I will forever thank them for creating Watt on Earth. 

I didn't like the young guy getting permanently turned into a tree, it seemed unnecessary.

Apparently the actor had been told his performance was a bit wooden, and that he should branch out more.

So this is permanence, love's shattered pride.
What once was innocence, turned on its side.

He really should have taken a leaf out of Colin's book and gone all out
