Delta and the Bannermen

I keep forgetting to mention that I really dislike the new beginnings with this Doctor. the music is not the same, and after all this time to make such a major one is disappointing.
Delta, another fun story, I kept hoping to see/hear Stubby Kaye stroll n sing ala "Cat Ballou"... The story itself starts well w/ Delta fighting off the Bannermen, then we see our heroes thrown off schedule, so no Disneyland, instead a Holiday camp? Where was Tommy?
Oh we are in 1958 I guess.
It's a good thing the villains allowed the Doctor to walk in, white flag n all, and untie and leave with Mel w/o any reaction, Then they chase....
The honey n the bees, were a hilarious finish, as was Blly turning into a Chimeron, so that he and Delta can re-start the race, Adam n Eve? with a daughter

I typically use this episode to undermine and discredit McCoy's tenure of "DW!" Just mentioning the title is enough to get most people to laugh! "Remembrance Of The Daleks" the only ep I can stomach repeated!  [giveu[]

Yeah, that opening theme music stinks doesn't it. Keff McCulloch's wasn't one of the better composers they had. The visuals are stellar in the opening though, and the new logo is WICKED as the new companion Ace, would put it.
How I love McCoy's first year(minus Time and the Rani.) Doctor Who doing a musical tribute to the 1950's with a wonderfully weird story and some heavy themes mixed in. This entire serial was a delightful romp.

cracking cast.

Balotelli...Aguerooooo! I swear you will never see anything like this ever again!

I really like Delta and the Bannermen... I can admit that it's not perfect; the aliens pre-transformation look ridiculous, and Billy comes on like a borderline date rapist, he just assumes that Delta is going to allow him to go with her and help her repopulate the planet... you'd have to laugh if, the moment they got into space, Delta and her daughter devoured Billy.

That aside, it's a fun story. It's not too high stress, just a little alien invasion at a summer camp and a bit of a chase through the country. I think that it might help that I saw the show as a kid so I formed favourable opinions back then... but maybe not, because I still enjoy it now whereas other stories have gone down in my estimation.

From memory, in the novelisation they tried to hint that Goronwy was some kind of time lord.

I think that's a bit of a distasteful comparison. There's a world of difference between a man deciding that one way or another he's going to have sex with the woman in question regardless of consent, and a man who loves a woman and will do anything he can to be with her unless she rejects him.

you'd have to laugh if, the moment they got into space, Delta and her daughter devoured Billy.

Now that I do agree with.

Apart from not liking this story anyway, I especially disliked the violation of conservation of mass where the daughter was concerned.

So this is permanence, love's shattered pride.

Well I just meant that he kind of forces himself into her life. He steals her baby food and starts pursuing her with a singlemindedness that is a bit offputting, then he pretty much seems to invite himself along with her... I dunno, he just had a bit of a 'rapey' vibe to him

- The story offers up one of the great 'what ifs' in Who, namely what would Ray have been like had she become the companion instead of Ace (as was purportedly being considered by the production team at the time)? Welsh people look away now but I suspect that Sara Griffiths exaggerated Welsh accent would've grated sooner with viewers rather than later. Ray's bubbly and resourceful though so she's certainly a character with potential.

Possibly it would have ended up going a similar way to Frazer Hines with Jamie where he softened his scottish accent for subsequent stories

As one of a seemingly tiny gaggle of fans who actually like Delta and the Bannermen (I feel like a heretic!) and, being that I coincidentally rewatched it only yesterday I feel duty bound to share some random observations of Delta' with it still fresh:

- Belinda Mayne (who played Delta) isn't very good though to be fair her character is almost completely devoid of personality. She's also sexy as hell though so it's not all bad!

- The story offers up one of the more intriguing 'what ifs' in Who, namely what would Ray have been like had she become the companion instead of Ace (as was purportedly being considered by the production team at the time)? Welsh people look away now but I suspect that Sara Griffiths exaggerated Welsh accent would've grated sooner with viewers rather than later. Ray's bubbly and resourceful though so she's certainly a character with potential.

- Ken Dodd's cameo role isn't nearly as bad as it sounds or indeed deserves to be and, dare I say it, actually works quite well with Ken doing a surprisingly haunting job with his death agonies.

- Is Mel slightly less irritating in this one? She almost seems to have a character in Delta and there's even a brief hint of her computer programmer (no don't laugh) background!

- As a Holmesian-esque (Bob not Sherlock) double act, Hawk and Weissmuller are actually pretty good if somewhat extraneous to the story.

- Though Delta works as a three parter it certainly could've benefited from an extra episode to pace things better.

- The opening 'battle' sequence with the planet superimposed in the background via post-production FX looks really good and throws the viewer into the story.

- The paltry three episode length doesn't afford much depth to the characters - especially Gavrok and the Bannermen....who the hell are they anyway? What's their motivation?

- A combination of a script that doesn't know how to define the seventh Doctor's persona combined with McCoy's visible uncertainty of how to tackle the role himself is a recurring feature (and failure) in Season 24 but is especially prominent in Delta' which definitely detracts from the story.

- Just noticed via my aforementioned rewatch that the Bannermen's uniforms are old Federation Trooper outfits from Blake's 7 with the Federation emblem blackened out! The helmets are obviously repurposed from Earthshock.

.....I don't care what the rest of those philistines say, I like Delta and the Bannermen (despite its flaws). So there. 

Delta and the Bannermen isn't just my favourite from that season but one of my favourites. I'm not sure why fans get so uptight about this story, it's supposed to be lighthearted. The visual effects are good, the story's sci-fi costumes/sets in keeping with that era are some great cyberpunk elements, the cast are great (the extras look like they're having huge fun in their Hi-de-Hi! setting), Sara Griffiths in particular is absolutely cute but I think Ace was more intelligent in the long run so they made a good choice there, the comedy is good, it has lots of WTF moments that are both unintentionally funny and enjoyable plus Keff McCulloch's music is great as well, not just the incidental but his cover songs for the story. In all, the best way to watch this story is as a summer holiday Doctor Who adventure, while on holiday.

Special mention must go to the recently departed Johnny Dennis as Murray. His introduction was cool as well. Rest in Peace Murray. 

A bus full of alien tourists and their driver blew up and you're complaining about alien stereotyping? 

Poor Murray, he didn't deserve that...  
