Remembrance of the Daleks

Where the 7th Doctor takes charge.
In a lovely return to 1963, revisiting the beginnings, this Doctor acts much more like the cantankerous, first Doctor. Ho knows what he needs to do, and how to do it. Giving orders throughout.
Ace is a different sort also, she seems to be more than willing to take on anyone, or thing, much like Jamie was, in a female body. I am not over fond of the Ace character, not hing against Sophie, it isn't easy to play a wild 16 yr old
The story involving something the Doctor left behind that the daleks would love to get their metal arms on it. transmats always sound cool, like beaming me up, but involving space and time.
Daleks, Daleks, Daleks that "climb" stairs! How cool this must have been to the youngsters back then., So Dalek renegagades, and those of Davros, who, of course is the Emporer, The Doctor actually gets Davros to blow up the sun, which blows up the Daleks home world and then meeting the Last dalek, Supreme commander who knowing all is lost, kills itself
All in all a real good srory, with great acting. I would love to hace seen Pamela Salem, or Karen Gledhil become a companion, as they seem more in line with some of the others.
Time will tell, as the Doctor says, it always does

I am glad to see you are starting to like McCoy's stories. I hope you find The Happiness patrol enjoyable. After that you have creepy clowns and Nazis to finish off the season, enjoy!

That is what they wanted with the new companion when they made Ace, a more proactive companion. This is also why she has a bag of supplies with her. You will see more of this proactive nature as time goes on. You can see these qualities in Ray from Delta and the Bannermen. Ray was the original choice for new companion, with Ace as a backup, so they could pick which one they liked better. Interestingly enough, Sophie Aldred was one of the actresses considered for Ray. I personally would have liked the companion to have been Ray with Sophie playing her.

Did you notice the floating Dalek in the previous Dalek story, Revelation of the Daleks? A step up here with stair climbing. The next Dalek story they fly! But that is New Who.

I've always enjoyed Ace, again maybe it was one of those age things, I was 9 or 10 when she came on so I didn't see her as being naff or try-hard she was just fun.

I was pretty much done with Ace when I heard something about an "atomic bat!"  - I will watch it since Dalek episodes were an event back then; unlike today where the storylines with them are as common as anything! 

My decoder ring wasn't any help with that statement

That sounds about right. I've noticed kids take to those kind of characters more than adults. The first time I saw Ace, I was over 18. By that time I had seen plenty of that type of character, and they start to get grating after a while.

I was closing in on 30 by then and thought it a big "come down" from Romana! Ace was The Doctor's muscle because that's all she had to offer at the time! I loved companions that were helpful and didn't cause the drama! Give me a Nyssa or Jack anytime over a Rose or Clara!  

That pretty much sums up my issues with Ace beyond her being a juvenile delinquent who mostly knows how to destroy things. I wish they had picked Ray, she would have been more than muscle, offered a brain to help situations, and she didn't have Ace's issues that caused the unnecessary drama.

I'd say that beyond that Ace and the doctor/Sophie and Sylv had great rapport with each other so they did (to me) actually feel like two people who were enjoying travelling together, unlike the companions up till Peri.
I feel like Ace offered some brain power and more than ever, a way to humanise quite an alien and calculating doctor

Oh, their Rapport was a great highlight for the era. They gelled in a way most actors playing companion and Doctors never do.

Also about 9 years between the two characters :?

Remembrance of the Daleks is where I feel they got Doctor Who exactly right again. I can relate to it because of it's age but the script along with the music, effects, the ideas etc is excellent. That's why it's my favourite.

It does hit a lot of sweet spots, adventure, a bit of humour, some nice weighty dramatic moments, the doctor uses his brain to defeat his enemies and the little girl chasing Ace in the last ep is suitably creepy
