Great actor. Top bloke. 

That is sad, and kind of a shock... I'd had no idea that he'd been suffering from cancer 

Yeah, he didn't sound like he was ill when recording The War Doctor stories for Big Finish. He did sound old, but I wouldn't have attributed that to anything other than his age.

I highly recommend his performance in 1984. In the scenes where he looks like he's been tortured, he so effectively pulls off that he might actually HAVE been physically abused.

reply

"1984" was good, but I go back even further with him in "The Naked Civil Servant" and a role in "Alien!"  

Caligula has always been a fascinating person from history for me. I just happened to have I, Claudius coming up in my queue of DVD's to watch. Ironic, right? I've never seen it before but have always wanted to see Hurt's performance as Caligula.

reply

I did see that later! He was a perfect Caligula! How long does it take before everyone's so terrified, they have to knock off their ruler? "Russia; USA?"  

With Trump, I would imagine it just depends upon how long before he's prepared to stand still.

To celebrate his first anniversary as POTUS, the American people should chip in and buy him a new chair.

And make sure he plugs it in...

Old Sparky in NY might be available; with all kinds of extension cords attached! With a suspension of the "DP" years ago, it's just sitting collecting dust and non-use!  

that is the TV that the BBC should still be broadcasting. Instead of "how to bake a cake"

It's not just the BBC that has that problem.

In Australia, there seems to be an obsession with cooking food, losing weight, building houses, renovating houses, dancing with famous has-beens, making nobodies famous by acting foolishly, or voting self-important twats off *beep* islands.

I've probably missed a few categories, but you get the idea.

Yep. leave that stuff for the channels with adverts. I pay £145.50 a year for proper telly.

Yeah, mostly.

"I pay £145.50 a year for proper telly."

I pay nothing and get the ABC Network, the SBS Network and YouTube for free.

i should have qualified that, I am forced to pay £145.50 a year, but all the bbc give me is hours of how to bake a cake and 1 episode of DW.

That doesn't sound like much of a deal, unless Marilyn Monroe pops out of one of those cakes and sings HAPPY BIRTHDAY to you.

I like John Hurt's performance as Caligula in "I, Claudius", but it's a bit camp.

I think Ralph Bates gives a more serious interpretation of Caligula in "The Caesars".

Rest in Peace John.
