Dvd Release?

I really like this movie and have it on vhs but does anyone know if it will be coming out on dvd any time soon?

I don't think there is a US or UK DVD release planned, but there is a Brazilian DVD which contains the 155 min version. The picture quality isn't great though. I got it for about £12 on Ebay, keep an eye out for it if you're interested.

It was released in Thailand a couple of years ago and copies are very hard to track down. Its PAL format English language and case states 157 minutes runtime.

The current German DVD has an English soundtrack option. I don't know if it's a complete print, though.

There's a low budget release in Australia that I only discovered today. It comes with a warning that it may not play on DVD players made before 2003.

I just received mine from a company named Xploitedcinema.com who are based in Ohio, United States. They are very reliable and I recommend them. The transfer has excellent picture and sound quality and is a foreign import All Regions version and is actually spread over two discs, each showing about 76 minutes of the film. Running time is about 153 minutes. It is also in the correct 1.85:1 aspect ratio, whilst the old Fox VHS video was full screen. It is on the Castaway Pictures label and the catalogue number is CPDVD 200768. It has English dialogue and Chinese and English subtitles, which are hidden, but I guess you can turn them on if you want to. As far as I know, Xploited cinema won't be getting any more DVD's of this type in stock, so when the copies they've got are sold, that's it.

I got hold of the Castaway Pictures 2-dvd edition from Xploitedcinema.com, but I'm disappointed by the quality. The image is a bit soft and I had to adjust the red-green color balance to fix the turquoise skies and Stewart Granger's apoplectic face. Also, comparing some freeze-framed images to screen caps from the German dvd release, the Castaways print is slightly cropped at both sides, perhaps more 1.78:1 aspect ration than 1.85:1. It's watchable, but don't expect archive quality. At least it was cheap. (I don't have the German dvd, but from various reviews I've found on the web, the image quality varies from scene to scene and even within scenes, because it was compiled from a superior but censored print and an inferior but longer print. And diehard fans complain that both the Castaways and German dvds are missing a few snippits here and there.)
