Great Fight Scene
That scene where she is trying to get Helen to eat is wicked intense, and hilarious. Definitely in the top 10 best fight scenes of all time.

That scene had to have taken a lot out of both actresses!!
shareexcellent scene.
shareIt should be between
Matrix (Neo and Agent Smith fight for the fate of humanity)
Miracle worker (Helen and Anne fight to get Helen eat with a spoon)
They live (Nada and Frank fight so Frank would understand that the whole world is controlled by evil aliens)
no but seriously, the fight was really awesome.
It was NOT a "fight"!!! Helen was having a temper tantrum (which I'm sure NONE of you have ever had) because Annie wasn't letting Helen get her own way.
It was Annie teaching discipline (apparently a VERY hard word for some of you to comprehend), teaching her how to use a spoon and eat like a human being-not some wild animal-instead of throwing it across the room in a mental fit.
I'll go you one better Alienkidapk. In the context of pure action filmatism, this scene is more competent, dynamic, and visceral than any of the shakycammed tourettes edited crap in the Bourne flicks or any of the rest of the modern mainstream American so called "action" films.
shareAnd no CGI effects!
shareBack in the late 1980s when I was in elementary school our teachers used to show this to us at least once a year. All the kids loved this scene! I was flipping through the channels and caught it at this part and had to watch the entire rest of the film. That really was a well shot sequence. And they let it go on and on for quite awhile too, which really enriched it. These days that would be a two minute sequence.
shareWhat is even more remarkable is that these two wonderful actresses did this LIVE on broadway for 719 performances between 1959 and 1961.
"Adapt and Overcome"..VMortensen
I agree that these two actresses were remarkable. That scene was so intense it was almost frightening. When you think that in real life, how would you make Helen understand when she was used to just walking around from person to person and grabbing from their plates. Annie was strongwilled, no doubt about it. I guess the temper tantrums were really Helen's only way of communication.
Despite her toughness, Annie had a sense of humor, a dry wit. I loved when she said something like "the room's a mess but she folded her napkin"
"At the end of the day, we can endure much more than we think we can." Frida Kahlo
Well, it isn't supposed to be funny, although I remember seeing a version of it and just cracking up. It is unintentionally funny, that's all. And I'll tell you this: I certainly wouldn't have stayed there trying to feed that animal.
shareAbsolutely! The highlight of the movie!
