shareThere is a lot of simalarities and differences between both of them, but no major plot changing cuts. I'm in the play and I play Captain Keller (The Father). One thing is that the play has is a bit more of a story behind Keller and James (His oldest son) and what James thinks of Kate, Keller's other wife, and the struggle they have as father and son. If you don't know the story, Captain had 5 children (Simpson and James from his first marriage; Helen Mildread and Philip from Kate. Simpson and Philip are not in the play or the movie). There is more of a conversation between Kate and Annie when they pick Annie up from the train station. They talk about what Annie is going to teach Helen (which is language) and Annie's "advantages". There is also more of the servants playing a bigger part. They have more lines. I think that having the guy who wrote the play (William Gibsoon) write the screenplay. It made the movie so much better. Other than that just minor lines that were cut to make the script flow more better for film. I love the play and the movie. I think they are bothg fantastic but if I had to pick I would pick the play. Hope that answers your question.
Guess what? I got a fever! And the only prescription.. is more cowbell!-

A good plot thread that the movie shortchanges is the growing understanding between James and Kate. At first he resents her for replacing his mother, but as she supports him in his effort to stand up for himself against his father's domination, he learns to appreciate her.
shareI played Kate Keller in my school's production of the play, and her character really has some underlying humor in it that isn't really present in the film. For example, on more than one occasion she counters James and Captain Keller with rather biting quips.
shareThe climax in the 79' remake was the original. In the film, it was edited into 2 difference scenes.
