about the food the Kellers ate


I thought about this as I was watching the scene where Ann was getting Helen to sit and eat at the table ----

--- how conveninent that none of the food prepared that day had to be cut into pieces! It seemed that everything was capable of being eaten either by hand, fork or spoon. No knife was necessary.

Anybody else notice that?

In the stage version, they used bread, crumbled up to look like scrambled eggs. Real scrambled eggs got too slippery by the time Bancroft & Duke scattered them all over the floor. (I believe I read this in Patty Duke's book, "Call Me Anna.")

And don't you like how Anne Sullivan picks up the food from under the table...to feed to Helen?

we're doing the miracle worker for our spring play and we are using all real food, scrambled eggs, ham, bacon, everything.

That was common...people didn't know about floor germs, so they commonly ate from the floor. Annie's main goal was to teach Helen how to eat properly and in a civil manner. True, the "eggs" looked more like popcorn or crumbled crackers. Maybe it was dried eggs.

To me, it looks strangely like the bread cube food Fielding Melish & the female soldier were eating while making eyes at each other in BANANAS.

Well, it was breakfast, after all. Typical Southern breakfast would be scrambled eggs, biscuits (with butter or gravy and very important), sausages (also very important), hash browns or more often grits which are like cornmeal mush and very good. Fruit like melon for dessert. Now I'm flashing on the jokes about grits in "My Cousin Vinny".

That sounds yummy.

I like instant grits, but forgive me I sometimes have it with oatmeal or cream of wheat (different flavors).
