Well-Deserved Oscars
Having just watched this again this evening, I'm thinking of how well-deserved the Bancroft and Duke Oscar wins were (forgive me, Bette!) - it's so fitting that both performances one, because to have rewarded either one but not the other would have missed the point of [what used to be known as] "supporting actress" - Duke and Bancroft play brilliant against and with each other, each role extending into the other. I don't think this occurred again until Holly Hunter and Anna Paquin won for THE PIANO.
I was also reminded of John Mills' Oscar-winning turn as the village idiot in RYAN'S DAUGHTER - until I finally saw this film recently I'd somehow never been aware that he doesn't speak a single word in the entire film!
"I AM big - it's the pictures that got small!"
