Inga Swenson - the real 'heart' of this film?

Yes, Bancroft is wonderful & Patty Duke is fantastic. But Inga Swenson is simply captivating as the mother. She becomes the epitome of tough love, and it's heart-wrenching to watch as Inga slowly develops it at Bancroft's urging.

Swenson displays a quiet, determined, and loving strength that no one can ignore and everyone respects. Maybe it's just a mother being a mother - but her performance is amazing, and it brings me to tears every single time I watch.

Many probably don't remember her, but I do and I agree completely that she played the emotions of a mother on point.

Yes, I'd say it's your mother-thing; the importance you feel about yourself.
Duke/ Bancroft== real heart of the film, obviously.

I love Inga Swenson, but she hams it up in this movie.
