In the manga/anime Glass Mask it is stated that Duke got the part because when all the candidates were left waiting in a room for the director "just like Helen would have done", an alarm was rang and she was the only one who didn't move because she was so deeply in the role.

shareOn further thought, I assume you meant the audition for the play. i believe she didn't need to audition for the movie.
She was groomed by her managers for the part of Helen Keller long before the audition, as I recall from reading Patty's biography.
