Shelley Winters is a complete joke as an actress. She can not act to save her life.

It is so obvious she is acting its nauseating. It is like someone pretend acting in real life that is how bad it is.
Yes, she is "obvious." It was intentional. Charlotte was a pretentious person. Winters even said many years later in an interview that she pretended to be more artistic and sophisticated than she actually was.
That said, the scene before her suicide is haunting and tragic because it was Charlotte at her most vulnerable and genuine moment. Despite being obnoxious, she does manage to garner sympathy for her character.
