Lawrence of Arabia wins for making both lists. Moral of the story? Collect them all.

In no particular order:

1. Amadeus
2. The Godfather
3. The Godfather: Part II
4. The Deer Hunter
5. Titanic
6. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
7. Lawrence of Arabia
8. Casablanca
9. All About Eve

My top ten personal favorite winners in release order:

1. Bridge on the River Kwai
2. Ben-Hur
3. Lawrence of Arabia
4. My Fair Lady
5. Godfather
6. Godfather II
7. Dances with Wolves
8. Unforgiven
9. Schindler's List
10. Braveheart

My top ten favorite Best Picture nominees in release order:

1. 12 Angry Men
2. To Kill a Mockingbird
3. Goodfellas
4. Pulp Fiction
5. Sense and Sensibility
6. Fargo
7. L.A. Confidential
8. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
9. There Will Be Blood
10. Lincoln

Half of these movies came out in the 90's, which shows my bias. But Lawrence of Arabia belongs on a list of the best of the Best Pictures.

reply

All subjective of course and for 1 on my list, I could just as easily chose an un-nominated film, as being greater than what won.

1-AMADEUS-84'
2-MIDNIGHT COWBOY-69'
3-OUT OF AFRICA-85'
4-DANCES WITH WOLVES-90'
5-ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST-75'
6-THE GODFATHER PART II-74'
7-LAWRENCE OF ARABIA-62'
8-PATTON-70'
9-ALL ABOUT EVE-50'
10-THE GODFATHER-72'

I haven't seen anywhere near all the best picture winners, so I can't have a completely informed opinion, but from what I've seen... (the first two are my favorite two and the rest are ordered as I recall them.

1. Midnight Cowboy
2. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
3. All About Eve
4. Annie Hall
5. West Side Story
6. Ordinary People
7. Terms of Endearment

Okay, I guess I can't come up with ten BP winners that I love. The Deer Hunter, The Apartment, Lawrence of Arabia all have stuff that I really l like in it, but I don't lover them. I do need to see Amadeus as I know several people that love it. And it looks interesting.

Neither have I Mr. H; but going by public sentiment, many that get listed as being a worthy winner, tend to have popular consensus and I have seen all the films on my list, some several times. Of course, there is the "film that didn't win" scenario and could now be considered more deserving, or those that go un-nominated and are now considered classics over the winner or nominees. It is all personal taste and I am quite open to what others can perceive to be "great" film, even if it might not be considered one of my favorites.

I just realized I dismissed GONE WITH WIND-39'; but I don't know what to replace it with and I had initially listed THE DEER HUNTER-78', until I realized I forgot "Cuckoo's Nest"-75'. while ORDINARY PEOPLE-80', is a personal favorite of mine, I can't rate it as "greatest", in relation to the other winners on my list. It would certainly rate very highly, if it was 10 "Favorite" BP winners, and my list would change drastically.

Yes, you do Mr. H. I don't normally associate with people who haven't seen AMADEUS.......😄 If you do get an opportunity to see it, can I suggest you watch the Theatrical Cut first. I have some issues with the Director's Cut and while not major, it can change the tone of the film and some scenes appear unnecessary. Besides, the original version is the one that won Picture. Love to hear your opinion, on what I consider not only a worthy winner; but also one of my favorites and one of the best American films produced in the 80's.

reply

Agree about the theatrical cut vs the director's. The added scenes did nothing for the movie.
