Original ending

Great movie but the ending is a bit 'abrupt'.
But reading the trivia page I noticed they ran out of film stock at the end of 'shooting' due to overspending the budget. Also the screenwriter, Robert Pirosh, walked out being the original director and was replaced by Siegel.
Does anybody know what would have been the original ending ?

I'd like to know too but I've seen no evidence of it being revealed, I'm sure it'd be inputted by fans on its wiki or IMDB pages if it was known.
If I had to guess, the battle would've concluded and the surviving characters if any would've got together for a last exchange like in many other war pictures. I do sorta like the uncertainty of who got to live beyond that day rather than a cliched ending, so if I knew what was planned I'd still disregard it in context of the finished article but it'd be a nice bit of trivia.

OK, that could be. But also the last battle would have been much longer and there would be some German soldiers in (you only see shooting from the bunker). No money left for hiring the extras!
