.......but I would love to have heard Bernard Hermann compose the music for this film. With all those heavy brooding chords he has in his music he would have captured the tone of the film perfectly.
Goldsmith was recommended to do this score by none other than Alfred Newman, who was working on Flower Drum Song at Universal during the same time Freud was being made. He had noticed JG's work on the Thriller tv series and insisted to the execs at the studio that Goldsmith was the right choice to do the music for Freud. The score earned Jerry his first Oscar nomination and led to his long-term contract at Fox, and his career took off. I think his score to Freud is effective and dramatically appropriate.
Of course Herrmann would have done an excellent job, but this was a key assignment in Jerry Goldsmith's early career.
Terry Rawlings maintains that while the use of Howard Hanson's Romantic Symphony was their decision, the Freud cues were retained at the demand of the studio.
