When Bond kills the dude in shallow water just off the island

he doesn't take the machine gun the dude was carrying. Rather he just lets it sink to the bottom of the water along with the dead dude. WHY? That didn't make any damn sense.

All the three of them had was his Walter and Honey's knife against a bunch of armed adversaries.

They were in Crab Key simply to investigate without being detected by Dr. No's patrol squad. Taking the machine gun and using it against them would mean alerting more patrol units.

I agree with the OP. Certainly they wanted to avoid detection, so obviously would not use the machine gun to start an attack. But they were being hunted down, and having a weapon of that power would have been a huge asset. It doesn't make any sense at all that he did not take it.

In the book Quarrell takes the gun

At least Ian Fleming didn't make such a bonehead error.

Do machine guns still work after they've been soaked in sea water?

reply

Don't see why they wouldn't.

Have you heard the old saying "keep your powder dry"? It actually refers to gunpowder, not makeup, because gunpowder doesn't work when it's wet.

Of course I have no idea how water-resistant modern bullets and firing mechanisms are, which is why I asked.

Not sure how accurate this is: https://www.quora.com/Can-guns-get-wet

Also considering how wet it was in Vietnam you'd think that the weapons they used would still work no matter how wet they got (or else every platoon would have to come into base camp whenever it rained).

It's a pity the Mythbusters are gone, this is exactly the kind of question they could answer in detail.
