Magnificent...even after all these years

Just watched my DVD copy on our new 32 inch LCD TV, and DVD player...magnificent ! Time seperates the good from the bad, and this one is just great ! Perfect script, great cast, Bernard Herrman at the pinnacle of his powers delivers a fantastic, incredible, and beautiful score...!! What else can I say...? Going to watch it again tonight ! The true meaning of a "feel good" great adventure film...probably the finest of the Harryhausen/Schneer partnership, with "Jason & the Argonauts" a definite second. Might have more...

We agree completely! :)

I agree too. This movie was f@#$ing epic. IT has a cast of good actors, and it is a well written story with interesting characters, a science fiction mystery, giant monsters, pirates, lost cities and a cataclysmic finale. Even without the intoxicating Bernard Hermann score, countless beautiful matte paintings, and the incredible stop motion effects of Ray Harryhausen, this movie would still be good, but those extra goods are just the icing on the cake that make this movie epic.

and don't forget leggy Beth Rogan providing the eye candy.

Well, I would rate _Jason and the Argonauts_ the finest, with _Mysterious Island_ a very close second. I love both a LOT.

And I stood where I did be; for there was no more use to run; And again I lookt with my hope gone.

Yes, you're right. It is magnificent. I just noticed something, though. The Captain is a dead ringer for Robert Ryan and I thought Herbert was Sal Mineo.

Starrbeat presents what's happening.

Classic goods.

My response:

Wow, you pretty much summed it up. The last time I saw this movie was during the seventies as a young child and years later as an adult I found myself just as enchanted as I was then. I seriously doubt many of today's Hollywood blockbusters will hold up in twenty-five years!

I absolutely agree with you.One of the complaints by critics about some of Ray Harryhausen's films is that the scripts are mediocre at best & only work to spoylight his incredible animation FX.Yes,sometimes that is the case & I say that as a huge fan of Ray's work.MI is definitely an exception, here we see a strong script that is supported by dazzling stop-motion work.Nothing mediocre here at all.
