Inside Jokes or ... ?

Just saw this film.

As one Reviewer here noted, there sure are what appear to be a LOT of jokes about Male Sexuality.

Everyone in Hollywood knew Rock was gay, but the viewers didn't.

Was this all Inside Jokes?

There are jokes about homosexuality in all the Rock Hudson´s comedies.

Subliminal jokes, bobbiegirl, subliminal jokes, not so evident like when we watch how Rock Hudson wakes up on a bed where a drunk man is sleeping after a party night or when he wears a woman´s coat because he has lost his clothes.

Of course there were insider jokes about Rock's sexual preference. Here and in Pillow Talk. Hollywood was jerking our chain to show they could represent him as America's sex symbol. Hollywood reporters knew about his "gayness" but their bread was buttered by keeping it quiet as they did about other gay actors. Hudson's career would have been destroyed if the public knew of his sex life.
The studio even arranged a "marriage" for him to quell any talk.

The most obvious inside joke is when Rock is inveigling Doris to let him stay at her apartment, She thinks she is making the offer for professional reasons, he of course is getting her to the bedroom. Finally she actually insists that he stay in her spare room, he pretends to demur.

I can't remember the exact dialogue, but paraphrased it goes like this:

Doris: you must stay in the spare bedroom tonight

Rock (pretending to be timid and embarrassed): oh no I couldn't

Doris: Of course you can; see you have your own bed, we'll close the door and there is a lock.
And (pointing behind him) there's even your own back door entrance.

I am sure that Doris had no idea what she was saying, but I often wonder whether Rock thought the reference was accidental, or whether he was part of the joke, or whether the writers put it in to have a laugh at his expense.

I do not believe this lines were a joke about Rock's gayness, it was about the actual storyline that he was supposedly be the shy, virginal Professor who was creator of VIP.

I know there are several jokes that could be double meaning when Tony Randell had to stay in his apartment and when they went hunting together.

I just watched this on AMC and the scene where ROck is trying to get the blue off Tony's face with alcohol looks kind of gay to me for he is holding Tony's head with his hand and rubbing his face lol.

How about the part where Doris is talking to the bloke showing her proofs......
Doris :What colour is that floor?
Bloke:Lilac...
D: Liliac? Who has a lilac floor in their kitchen?
B: I have!
D: Oh, ..well...Larr....everyone isn't as artistic as YOU are...!

reply

I believe I remember that. Wow I posted 2 yrs ago. Time flies. I had forgotten I had seen this movie then. So the bloke might have been gay. Very Funny

reply

Of course there were gay jokes, just as there were virgin jokes and other sex jokes in these sex comedies.

But they WERE NOT winks at Rock's sexuality, which absolutely would not have been tolerated by the actor. Even his good friend Doris Day did not discuss Rock's personal life with him. Yes, his gayness was an open secret, but it was not discussed on set, and certainly not joked about.

After add DD dumps RH at the beach, nude, he is saved by the Fur Cleaner Van guy. When Rah returns to his apartment wearing just a fur, the 2 blokes see him and make a comment meaning that they are surprised by their realization that he's actually gay

reply

I don't know if the jokes were deliberate. But Rock Hudson look relieved to shed his tough-guy image.

reply

The only gay reference I picked up on was a lesbian one. DD said something about she was going to start romancing the clients herself by getting them drunk and surrounding them with sexy women and Brady Bunch Alice says 'well you can count me in'. Too funny
